PERSONALITY;
The first thing one notices about Ed is his air of confidence. It's hard to mistake a fifteen-year-old who achieved something at twelve that most adults can't ever get. Then again, somehow, people manage it, and end up meeting Ed's next largest personality trait: his temper. Whether it's just being annoyed, or being called short, he has the capacity to have anything from a spazz fit to a destructive rage.

Early in life, he was pretty much a punk. His best friend's grandmother was an old woman, and he constantly was under the impression adults were interfering. As he aged (and, naturally, became more of an adult himself) his view of adults gradually shifted away from "always wrong" to something along the lines of distrust, but not utter rejection, to something along the lines of simple acceptance of age. In combination with this comes a lack of respect for authority. Be it Colonel Mustang or an adult trying to convince him to do something "because he's just a kid," Ed's speech patterns are disrespectful and direct.

Because so much of his time was spent reading, secluded, Ed has issues actually having proper human contact. He can be rude when his mind is on something, and totally focused on one subject for days. He hates being coddled and would rather take 10 days to forge his own path than take 2 days being watched over and told how to do it. Also due to a childhood spent immersed in Alchemy books, Ed replaces the concept of God and religion with the Law of Equivalent Exchange and Alchemy – preferring to trust in human ingenuity rather than a mystical spiritual being.

Underneath the disrespect and uncaring attitude is a boy searching for a way to repair the damage he created. Ed carries guilt for "stealing" Alphonse's chance to be normal, and he would be willing to do almost anything for his brother, including sacrificing his life. Alphonse is the only family he has left, and, as such, protects his younger brother with zealous devotion.
